Welcome to Sixth Grade Language Arts!

Dear Parents & Students,

I am so excited to have your child in my class this year. This letter will outline what we’ll be doing this year, as well as other helpful information for parents and students. Please read and keep for future reference.

In class:

  • DO Now Activity- We will begin each day with a short writing prompt or a grammar skills practice. These will be done in a five-subject notebook or a composition book (one of the four that was included on the 6th grade supply list; there is no need to go buy another one☺).  Students will be responsibe for bringing their notebooks to class everyday.

  • Each nine weeks we will focus on a thematic unit.  During the unit, we will read a novel and a variety of short, nonfiction pieces. We will also have at least one extended writing (either informational, argumentative, or narrative) per unit.

  • We will work on grammar, vocabulary, figurative language, and other topics throughout the year.

  • We will have a unit exam each nine weeks and a variety of projects throughout the year.

Supplies:

Any supplies needed for language arts were included on the 6th grade supply list, so there is no need to go out and purchase more. The supplies from the 6th grade list that we will be using are:

  • One five-subject notebook or composition book for class notes.  This notebook will become the students textbook.  It will contain important information that will help students study for quizzes and test.

  • One pocket folder in the binder to keep notes/work/graded assignments.

  • One pocket folder in the locker to place graded work from previous nine weeks (we will “clean out” our folders and binders at the end of each grading period).

  • Frequently used: paper, pencils/pens, colored pencils/crayons/marker

  • On occasion: index cards, technology, earbuds/headphones, scissors, glue sticks, highlighters, dry erase markers, post-it notes.

Homework:

We ask that students read 150 pages or 2 hours each week.  This can be at school, at home, or both!  What they read is totally up to them.  Each week studenst will be given a reading assignment to complete about what they read, and this will be due every Friday.  We will visit the media center every two weeks so that they can get new books.  Students also read at school during morning homebase, and we give them 30 minutes to read in Language Arts on Fridays. Independent reading is the fastest and easiest way to become a better reader!  Please encourage your students to read!

Communication:

  • Please check your child’s agenda and stamp card weekly. These tools will show you what we are doing in class each day, their assigned homework, and their behavior in class.

  • Emails will go home regarding news and homework.
